Debunking common myths about in-house training
In-house training offers firms many advantages: from saving on costs to providing opportunities for continuous improvement, training employees in-house can prove to be beneficial in the long run for accountancy firms. But some myths surrounding in-house training persist; here, we take a look at these myths with the aim of debunking them.
Myth one: the costs are high
The myth that in-house training is too costly is the easiest to dispel. Significant cost savings can be made as a result of providing in-house training to workers. These include saving on the cost of securing places on outsourced training courses; reducing employee costs associated with travelling to training venues and accommodation; and minimising costs by using your own facilities to carry out the training.
Tutors can also be hired to deliver your own internal training content to your employees. This is helpful where a firm has its own material but has a lack of resource or skillset.
Myth two: there’s too much time investment involved
Creating your own in-house training courses doesn’t have to be onerous. Employers can tailor the content to suit their employees’ development requirements, and therefore have control over how much time is spent generating course content and aims.
Customised training only helps to benefit firms’ employees: employers are able to ensure courses and programmes are aligned with the company’s goals and stated values.
Myth three: in-house training isn’t effective
In-house training can be just as effective as outsourced training. Courses can be tailored to suit your employees’ needs and learning styles, and in-house training can assist workers in carrying out their jobs more efficiently and effectively. Additionally, keeping training in-house may help employees to feel valued in their roles, increasing job satisfaction and helping to boost talent retention.
Teaching employees in-house also allows for cross-training, whereby workers can be taught how to perform tasks outside the typical responsibilities associated with their role. Cross-training promotes flexibility and engenders a better understanding of the firm and its values.
Myth four: in-house training wastes resources
Training your employees in-house makes use of internal resources, rather than wasting them. Firms are advised to utilise the knowledge and expertise they already have when training others – this helps to reduce the costs associated with external training and also allows employers to communicate their own internal policies and procedures.
In-house training also helps to create a strong and recognisable brand for your firm. Providing access to training and learning in-house will enable employees to better achieve learning outcomes that are tied to the business’s organisational values and principles.
