Our Designated Professional Body (Investment Business) Compliance Manual provides guidance and supporting documentation that will help you to establish and maintain investment business compliance procedures within your firm.
Providing a set of simplified procedures to ensure that a firm, licensed by its Designated Professional Body (DPB) to carry out a restricted range of investment business activities, can operate within the confines of that licence, the manual includes:
• General compliance procedures to help ensure that everyone in the firm is aware of the key compliance issues
• Help for firms to satisfy the requirements of their Institute's DPB (Investment Business) licence
• Guidance on referring clients to an IFA, acting as trustee, executor or Power of Attorney for clients and handling corporate finance work

- general compliance procedures, including an annual investment business compliance review
- referring clients, for example to a Permitted Third Party or to your own in-house or joint venture IFA business
- corporate finance activities; the typical areas of concern and managing your professional liability
- advertisements and financial promotions, including necessary statements and guidance on exemptions
- trustees, executors and powers of attorney, establishing permitted activities and engagement terms
- the clients' money regulations, including an annual compliance review
- fee protection policies.
July 2023
The principal changes in this update the issuance of the DPB Update Issue 14 by the ICAEW and the revised ICAEW DPB Handbook.
In addition, minor amendments / improvements have been made to other sections of the package, including the addition of forms to aid with compliance.
January 2022
This update principally dealt with:
- Changes to reflect the requirements of the ICAEW Code of Ethics regarding unregulated commissions.
- Changes to the FRC Ethical Standard concerning contingent fees for audit clients.
- Changes to guidance concerning the use of client accounts as trust bank accounts.
June 2021
The manual has been restructure throughout to improve the user experience and to facilitate the new system of product delivery.
