Masterclass - Varying the Disposition of Estates

Taking extracts from our popular Conference programme, Mercia Masterclasses offer a unique opportunity to hear from experts in specialist areas without having to attend the full conference event.

Post-death variations are often seen as ‘bread and butter’ for private client practitioners but there are a number of pitfalls. Lesley King from the University of Law looks at how to avoid the pitfalls but will also look at the opportunities for adding value for clients. While variations can be used to redirect assets (‘generation skipping’), increasingly they are used to ‘re jig’ the distribution of assets to achieve a more satisfactory IHT result.

This session will consider:

  • The statutory provisions available and the differences between them.
  • The formalities required for each.
  • Ways in which the provisions can be used to benefit clients.
  • Common pitfalls
